In hospitals across the United States, nurses are extensively considered as the linchpins in the delivery of high-quality care to patients. However, many hospitals and other healthcare settings have inadequate nurses because of various reasons, which affect the quality of care provided (Dotson, Dave & Cazier, 2012). Thesis statement: this paper discusses a practical problem which emerges from the evidence in existing literature as well as in professional nursing practice. In particular, the practical problem is shortage of registered nurses. This paper also provides an exhaustive discussion of the significance of this problem and a rationale for the significance.
One practice problem that emerges from the evidence in professional practice or existing literature is the shortage of nurses. It is projected that the United States would have a shortage of Registered Nurses, which would increase as the need for healthcare intensifies and Baby Boomer age. To compound this problem, schools of nursing throughout America are struggling to expand capacity to satisfy the growing demand for care following the shift towards healthcare reform (Johnson et al., 2016). As per employment projections 2012-2022, it is indicated that Registered Nursing is in fact one of the top job occupations in terms of job growth (Rosseter, 2014).
The main factors that contribute to the shortage of nurses are several and include the following: a large number of nurses are aging or nearing the age of retirement; high vacancy rates and nurse turnover; and a shortage of nursing school faculty which serves to restrict enrolments to nursing program (Rosseter, 2014). In the next ten to fifteen years, it is projected that over 1 million Registered Nurses would reach the age of retirement (Snavely, 2016).
