NSG 410: Literature Review
April 5, 2017
Introduction
Scabies is a skin disease that causes the patient to itch on their skins. To evaluate the disease and better understand the best way to control the same, there are two main research paper that have been reviewed; Scabies. Paediatrics & Child Health and Toward the global control of human scabies: Introducing the international alliance for the control of scabies. To search and find the research papers, some of the key search words that were used included; scabies, reinfection of scabies, crusted scabies, managing scabies, infestation, oral, poverty, pruritus, indigenous communities, reducing scabies incidences and nurse’s intervention on scabies among others. The two research papers offer insightful information about the disease from the way it is spread, the global trends relative to control, diagnosis, treatment and control measures among others. With an estimated 300 million cases of morbidity annually on the global scale, it is crucial to consider the significance of the disease as a burden on the global health resources. This is a significant burden and one that needs to the addressed (Johnston, 2005). Nurses are the forefront of enhancing the health of the patient.
More importantly, because the disease is commonly associated with reinfections. As such, nurses have to be educated on the best ways to ensure there no reinfections on the patients that they treat at the hospital. This enhances the outcome of the patient and ensures that the disease is managed optimally. This research tries to establish the significant of having the Can trained on the various interventions that they can use to control the disease and ensure that they have reduced the rate of reinfection to the bare minimum. This is established against a backdrop of nurses that are not trained on the best interventions to help reduce reinfections. However, this group is given pamphlets to read up on.
PICOT Question:
In newly hired CNAs in Sunrise Assisted Living, Alexandra, how effective is providing training about scabies on reducing the rate of re-infection in comparison with CNAs who received no training or just a pamphlet.
Background
For CNA’s nurses, it is crucial that they have the full information amount the disease and ow best to manage the same. As such, the research paper selected for the literature review in this case are a reflection of the information that nurses should have to help them come up with the best intervention (Johnston, 2005). This is information that should inform the training of the nurses to enhance their skills at all a time with an aim of reducing the rate of reinfection.
Scabies is one of the most contagious skin infections that causes the patients to itch (Engelman, Kiang, Chosidow, McCarthy, Fuller, Lammie & Steer, 2013). The disease is caused mites that are referred to as Sarcoptes scabiei (Engelman, Kiang, Chosidow, McCarthy, Fuller, Lammie & Steer, 2013). A single patient will have an estimated 12 mites. However, where the patient has crusted scabies, they will have thousands of the mites on their skin. This is a health problem that is quite common within the...
