Breast cancer is the top kind of cancer in women of the world right now, both in the developing and already developed countries. However, cases of the disease are growing to be experienced more in most of the developing nations due to an increased number of people preferring urbanization, increased life expectancy, and robust adoption of Western lifestyles. Although there is no single standard method of eliminating the epidemic, there are forms of reducing the risk through prevention and diagnosing it the very late stages in low and middle-income countries around the world.
There are several methods of control and prevention recommended by public health providers. The first method is early detection, which is done in two ways, early diagnosis after identifying potential signs and symptoms then through screening. Health providers recommend population-based testing as a preventive method (JAMA Patient Page, 2016)). So far, the only form of breast cancer screening that has proved to be useful is mammography screening. Another method of preventing the disease is Breast Self-Examination (BSE) that empowers women to take responsibility for their health. The next prevention service is Clinical Breast Examination, a low-cost approach that yields preliminary results.
The risk of a woman getting cancer increases with age. According to the American Cancer Society, 1 out of 8 malignant forms of breast cancer develop in women who are below the age of 45, but 2 out of 8 of the disease are found in women older than 55 years (Shoemaker et al., 2018). The factor is the most significant facilitator of the cancer disease because as an individual age, their immunity reduces, making it challenging to fight genetic mutations and damage in the body. Another major factor is genetics and the primary genes offering a lot of opposition to preventive methods such as screening are BRCA1 and BRCA2. The central role of these genes is to suppress tumors and DNA damage in the body. Therefore, when these tumors develop mutations, they increase a significant risk of getting breast cancer. Studies show that 16% of substantial cases of breast cancer are due to variation in genes and this goes hand in hand with the age of the individual at risk (Shoemaker et al., 2018).
