This activity is designed to familiarize you as a future educator with evaluating student written assignments.  For this assignment you will be grading an actual student's paper! 

 
Using the grading rubric, at the end of the sample student paper, you will read and grade a paper.
  • Use the Track Changes tool in Word to make comments and corrections to the paper.
  • Provide suggestions to student to improve paper content and adherence to guidelines in the comments section.
  • Balance comments between positive and corrective.
  • Check spelling, grammar, sentence structure, and organization of ideas.
  • Evaluate the reference page according to APA 7th edition.
 
Student’s Essay Guidelines
Student will write a 3-5 page essay about nursing informatics. The essay will contain correct APA formatting and must include a minimum of six references consisting of two newspaper articles, two journal articles, one textbook, and one website.
The essay will also consist of a title page, abstract, introduction, literature review/analysis, conclusion, and reference page and be guided by APA 7th edition.
Peer Reviewer Grading Guidelines
The essay will be graded based on the criteria below:
Content 
•    Abstract summarizing the essay.
•    What is nursing informatics (define and give examples.)
•    Discuss pedagogical theories that incorporate evolving technology for the advanced practice nurse.
•    Discuss the effect of technology in advanced practice nursing and describe the role of the nurse as knowledge worker.
•    Identify two types of information technology used within healthcare settings (e.g. electronic health records, telehealth, etc.).
•    Give specific examples of how computer technology can be used to support decision making, coordination of care, nursing education, patient education and evidence-based practice.
•    Discuss how generational and social issues influence the use of computer technologies.
•    Discuss an experience of using informatics/technology to evaluate nursing outcomes and assist your patients/clients to manage within a complex health delivery system.

•    Organized in a logical manner
•    Correct usage of grammar and style
•    Medical jargon not used or explained

•    Adequacy of references used in the paper as well as an appropriate number of references used to support the paper and the conclusion.

Educators are expected to assess and redesign nursing curricula to meet these needs and utilize computer technology to incorporate nursing informatics and evidence- based practice as the basis for delivering health care.

Technology and Education
The evolution of nursing practice and how we learn has changed. Knowledge and memorization of information is no longer sufficient. It is imperative now that we have the skills and ability to know how to access information, make sense of it, and then share it with others (Yoder & Terhorst, 2012). Nursing education no longer relies on textbooks to provide the bulk of information needed for one to advance in their nursing practice. Computer technology and its ability to give immediate access to information are now at the forefront of nursing education. The expanded use of technology, specifically electronic health records, has increased the nurses'nurses’ ability to quickly and efficiently share information (White, 2012). Nursing education has to keep up with these technological changes by fully integrating the use of the Internet and informatics into its curriculum. According to White (2012), today'stoday’s nurses now have to be highly educated and better prepared with new and innovative skill sets in their practice. Years of experience without the proper credentials to support one'sones knowledge, will no longer allow nurses to simply advance in their career path. Demonstrated competence in computer literacy is now a required part of the nursing curricula and must be
