The online training program towards addressing healthcare workplace violence (WPV), as proposed by the NIOSH Violence Prevention for Nurses, will be an inclusive exercise involving all the stakeholders. However, all the primary caregivers at all UCSD Health’s affiliates will be considered for the training during its official launch. Nurses, emergency department workers, and direct caregivers across all the UCSD Health affiliates will be active participants in the first year of rolling out the program. The management of UCSD Health will also prepare consent forms for patients who are willing to participate in the training program, as they are also among the key stakeholders of the health facility.
Timeline for the Program
The UCSD Health’s high scores in the AHRQ’’s readiness and assessment checklist outcome deems it ready to incorporate TeamSTEPPS for enhanced teamwork and safety cultural orientation. The NIOSH Violence Prevention for Nurses’ web-based training program offers an excellent opportunity to initiate teamwork and safety culture across all sectors of care. Implementing the training program will take approximately two months to allow for the installation of the online training applications and ensure their smooth running. The program will run for one year, pending a review of its efficacy.

The implementation of the program will involve the integration of both human and fiscal resources. The identified leaders for the implantation of TeamSTEPPS across all the different sectors and all heads of departments constitute the first group of care providers from UCSD Health that will undergo training and extensive discussions on effective implementation of the training program. In essence, the direct caregivers, nurses, emergency department staff, supervisors, managers, and security personnel will be active participants in the training program. Consequently, the need to train the departmental heads and other selected leaders to reduce the cost of hiring external trainers. UCSD Health will incur the initial cost of hiring external trainers. The successful candidates among the selected become the in-house trainers for the facility’s subsequent training initiatives against healthcare workplace violence. The implementation also demands the acquisition of new computers and updating some existing ones to allow for easy access to the web-based training courses. The management will further adjust its motivational approach on employees to include appreciation for the time spent in undertaking the training processes.
Methods and Instruments
The intervention developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety (NIOSH) is a web-based or online training program for nurses and other direct caregivers across the different healthcare sectors.
