They are involved in varying capacities in supporting people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) since the epidemic began in the 1980s. The epidemic has evolved from one of the greatest public health crises of the twentieth century along the chronic disease trajectory to a largely treatable and preventable chronic condition (Staudinger & Bettina, 2009). Life expectancy for individuals living with HIV has increased due to antiretroviral therapy.
