Introduction
Obesity has always been a recurring problem in many nations around the world. It affects everyone regardless of their age, gender, class, and status, and can lead to many adverse effects toward a person’s well-being. As according to a recent survey conducted by Statistica.com, Obesity rates in the United States in the year 2015-2016 are already as high as 18.5% for young Americans and about 39.6% for Adult Americans (McCarthy, 2017). This is alarming especially since obesity is known to cause a significant portion of both chronic and acute illnesses these days such as stroke, high blood pressure, and coronary heart disease. Additionally, this phenomenon could also decrease a person’s quality of life, due to the social repercussions of being overweight towards their psychological and emotional well-being. Nonetheless, the author believes that the effects of obesity could be reduced dramatically through self-awareness. This is because government policies, despite their number and effectivity, could only reduce the effects of this phenomenon on the global arena. It would be up to the people to actively participate and do their best to manage their weight and live healthily. In line with this, this article would show the author’s reasons for choosing the health issue, as well as a sample of an educational handout that would aid in increasing awareness towards patients about the issue of obesity.
