Childhood Obesity Picot Statement
Childhood obesity is an emerging point of concern for parents and the health care providers. According to the statistical data from the Center of Disease Control (CDC) (2018), nearly one in five schooling children in the age of six to nineteen years has obesity. While school programs are focused on creating responsible citizens, they also have a role to play when it comes to addressing social and health issues. The primary concern is that lack of intervention in the surging rates of obesity is a threat to the nation, especially considering adverse effects of obesity to the society. CDC (2018) defines obesity as having excess fats in the body. The main concern as to why there is a need to address this disorder is that the affected population is at a higher risk of developing diseases such as hypertension, sleep disorder, diabetes, and asthma. Obese children are also depressed as their fellow students make jokes out of them. This creates a need for finding suitable mechanisms that can be used to tackle the disorder in school-going children with the role of taking advantage of the school programs to address the issue. This PICOT statement intends to evaluate incidences of obesity in schools in the United States.
Population
The research conducted by Cunningham, Narayan, and Kramer (2014) in the school children of the age between five and fourteen years found that seventy-five had been overweight. The researchers also found that when children entered kindergarten at the mean age of 5.6 years, 12.4% of this population was obese and another 14.9 were overweight. A survey on girls indicated that they were more likely to develop obesity as compared to their male counterparts. Cheung, Cunningham, Naryan, and Kramer (2016) further found that incidences of obesity in the United States increase with age. Incidences of obesity were more pronounced in school-going children as compared to their counterparts at home.
