The objective of the study of Coke and More (2015) was to examine the family factors that influence children's behavior using the resiliency model of family stress, adjustment, and adaptation. The researchers obtained consent from the County's Board of Education and the university's institutional review board before beginning the enrollment of participants. All 117 participants were not exposed to psychological distress or discomfort during the research period. This feat was achieved because all the participants had to be able to speak and understand English. This requirement ensured that none of the participants experienced stress related to understanding while answering the questionnaires. The benefits to participants outweighed any potential risk and harm since they were awarded a $5 gift card and did not experience any form of distress during the study.
None of the participants was forced to engage in the study because all the volunteering participants "self-reported that they met the eligibility criteria for the study" (Coke and Moore, 2015). Furthermore, the participants were not deceived in any way, which suggests that appropriate consent procedures were applied. However, the researchers did not subject the participants to any training or informing programs. As a result, the participants did not fully understand the scope or the nature of the research. It is even possible that the participants may have just engaged in the study without fully understanding its objective because they were promised gift cards worth 5 dollars.
The participants in the study were African-Americans, who are commonly associated with high levels of poverty and racism in the United States. The participants were assigned identification numbers, and the ledger containing those numbers was placed in the principal investigator's office (Coke and Moore, 2015). Although using identification numbers protects the revelation of participants' names, the security steps undertaken were not adequate. The researchers should have obtained a Certificate of Confidentiality, which prohibits any individual, including the researchers, from revealing the identity of the participants to anybody, including federal, state, and local courts (Wolf et al., 2015). Women below 18 years were omitted from the research because "they were still undergoing developmental processes" (Coke and ...
