Course Outcomes
This assignment enables the student to meet the following Course Outcomes.
CO 1: Examine the sources of evidence that contribute to professional nursing practice. (PO 7)
CO 2: Apply research principles to the interpretation of the content of published research studies. (PO 4 & 8)
CO 5: Recognize the role of research findings in evidence-based practice. (PO 7 & 8)
Due Date
Submit the completed this assignment by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT at the end of Week 5.

Research aids medical professionals in enhancing their knowledge concerning diseases and other phenomena that do not have definite description, characterization, or diagnostic criteria, and treatment. To perform a beneficial research, it must conform to the norms of validity and reliability. Various methods have been sourced to construct the different types of research designs. Each research design has its specific components that reinforce the objectives of the study. To ensure the credibility of the study, the researchers must comply with the vital standards of the specific components of each research design (Walliman, 2017). The focus of this paper is to discuss one of the components of research design which is the sampling method.
There are two main types of research design, namely, the quantitative and qualitative research. The principal difference is the type of data necessary to continue the investigation. Quantitative research generally deals with the numerical data while qualitative research is typically concerned with the narratives and the abstract information. The latter is important in studies whose main objectives depend on the observation of the qualities of a specific group of subjects or participants (Walliman, 2017).
In the medical practice, the majority of studies utilize randomized controlled trials (RCTs). This study design is the benchmark of research. It provides information with significant values by enhancing its validity, reliability, and credibility through minimizing the biases in its study.
One of the ways to improve the research design is by refining the sampling techniques. Sampling is a procedure that aids the researchers in selecting the group of participants or subjects. These participants are known as the population of the study.
In clinical research, the population is typically restricted to a cluster of people who share common traits, conditions, or comorbidities. For instance, the researchers decided to study the aftereffects of a stroke. The researchers cannot observe or use the data of all the stroke patients globally. However, the researchers can procure a cluster of people that is representative of the whole population of stroke patients. This cluster of people is called the “sample population” or the “study population” and the process of selection of the sample or study population is called as the “sampling method” (Elfil & Negida, 2017).
Sampling methods are significant in increasing the power of the study. The more that the sample population represents the target population, the greater is its power. Moreover, the sampling methods can decrease the biases in a study which may reduce the integrity of the research. Choosing the best sampling technique allows the researchers to signify the accuracy of the data and their accountability (Elfil & Negida, 2017).
The principal categories of sampling techniques are the probability and non-probability sampling. In general, the difference between these two lies in the categorization or the organization of the selection. Probability sampling uses a systematized method, the...
