Title
Khan, et.al. (2016) study on pain management medicine is titled “ Evidence-Based Alternative Medicines in Pain Management 2016”. The title is short and informative. According to Vance, et. al. (2013), an ideal title should be less than 15 words. Further, the independent and dependent variable should be included in the title. In this study, pain management is the dependent variable while evidence-based alternative medicines is the independent variable. The title clearly states the topic that is being studied, which according to Moule, Aveyard, and Goodman (2017), is one of the important features of a good title. Further, the title should indicate the type of approach adopted by the researchers, which is lacking in the title of the study by Khan, et.al. (2016). Finally, the title of the study does not indicate the study population, which is a relevant part of a title, as noted by Polit and Beck (2012).
Abstract
An abstract provides a summary overview of what the study entails. It should briefly
summarize every section of the study which includes the objectives, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. As noted by Moule, Aveyard, and Goodman (2017), a good abstract allows the reader and other researchers to determine the relevance of the study without having to go through the entire study. However, the study by Khan, et.al. (2016) does not have an abstract, and as such, readers will have to read through the entire document to understand the contents.
Introduction
The article by Khan, et.al. (2016) does not have an explicit introduction section, although the problem and its significance in nursing has been properly identified.
Statement of the Problem
The introduction of the article by Khan, et.al. (2016) clearly identifies the research problem, which in this case is pain management. According to Moule, Aveyard, and Goodman (2017), the introduction of a study should clearly identify the research problem. Further, the identified research problem should be researchable, and this should be well illustrated in the introduction part of a study. In the study by Khan, et.al. (2016), the research problem identified is researchable because the focus is on the use of alternative medicines in managing pain, which is a narrow focus. Further, the identified problem is significant to nursing because as noted by Khan, et.al. (2016), pain affects the quality of life of a patient. Improving the quality of life of a patient is a major part of nursing, making this problem significant. Further, a quantitative approach is deemed relevant in this study because it will allow for generalization of the findings since pain is not limited to certain groups of people.
Hypotheses/ Research Questions
The research questions/ hypotheses have not been clearly stated in the study. Polit and Beck (2012) indicate that a good study should explicitly state the hypotheses or research questions.
