The component of obtaining medical history remains a fundamental concept that must be pursued during the interview process. In this regard, the information that must be captured during the interview with the patient must include the medical, social, medication, personal, and family history of the person. There is a general outline that must be applied when interviewing the patient. The questions must allow the patient to present her complaint, the history of the complaint (including investigation, treatment, and referrals already arranged and provided), the past medical history of the individual, past prescribed medication, family history (which includes parents, siblings, and children), and the social history of the person (Tidy, 2019).
Effective communication is the foundation of an excellent history-taking interview. When collecting the information about the patient, the consulting physician aims to gather the required information in order to offer the patient comprehensive treatment. In this regard, during the interviewing, the practitioner must include and identify the patient's ideas and thoughts, concerns, and what they expect from the process and the subsequent treatment. Instead of dominating the process with many questions, the physician must be a keen listener so as to identify the problem with the client (Tidy, 2019). Without proper communication skills, there are never any benefits that can be realized through the interviewing process. The main communication techniques that must be applied during the interview include “active listening, empathy, building rapport, open-ended questions, closed-ended questions, leading questions, silence, ‘why’ questions, and non-verbal communication cues” (Srivastava n.d.).
