Emergency Room Nursing
Clinical practice problems are problems that nurses face in their line of duty as emergency nurses and most of these challenges are issues that nurses can't control. A major problem affecting clinical practice in the emergency room is being short staff. There have been reports of shortage in clinical practitioners in health care across the nation (Hein, 2001). This project will be focusing on clinical practice problems which include: job dissatisfaction, long shifts, salary issues, discrimination which occurs among the nurses who tend to separate new nurses, the demand for nurses, the job being hazardous, overcrowding of inpatient areas, and the need for technology (Gary, Endacott& Crouch (2003). The focus will be on the demand and shortage of emergency nurses in hospitals and how these problems affect health care being admitted to patients especially those who require special treatment, attention and inpatient care in hospital cases.
The shortage of nurses is very common in emergency departments in the hospital or clinic. The issue mostly arises from the inside with some nurses conflicting and discriminating against each other (Sbaih, 2014). A new nurse even though it has been equipped with knowledge and skills that are useful in the emergency sector one still has to pass through a set of mean old nurses who might look down upon the newbie or give them manual work to do. Long shifts also become a reason as to why nurses might quit their jobs as emergency patient caregivers in this department. The long amount of shifts can be because the management is trying to minimize costs of hiring many nurses on this department thus organizing or scheduling longer working hours for the available nurses than the recommended time or shifts for nurses (Cowen & Moorhead, 2014).
The problem of having a few nurses in the emergency room can also be attributed to low salary payments to these caregivers. Across the economic world receiving a handful amount of money compared to the work done can very frustrating and this does not apply to medical nurses alone but people engaging in other various works in the world ( Newman, (2013). The other possible justification of this problem is the shortage of skilled personnel to work in special care units such as the intensive care unit are very few and those that are best qualified have been absorbed in better hospitals. This creates a ridge in the number of nurses of staff in the emergency department. Verbal and physical abuse of nurses by the patients or their families is a demoralizing aspect that can make nurses fill in the resignation letter and quit especially because the hospital did not intervene and the nurse was the one getting all the blame.
Overcrowded emergency rooms are...
