The Appropriateness of a Source in Clinical Practice

Research Paper Instructions:

How does a nurse know what (if any) knowledge in a research study is usable for clinical practice? What would a critical thinker look for in the evidence before deciding to change? What influence do credibility and clinical significance have on your decisions to integrate research-based evidence into your practice?
Research in the nursing field guides best practices and aids in safety practices for patient care. When assessing if the research study is viable for use there are some guidelines that nurses should keep in mind, was the research conducted in the last 5 years, authors have used primary sources rather rely on secondary, and is the review unbiased with findings that are conclusive ( (Houser, 2016, pgs.117 A critical thinker would analyze previous research and identify inconsistencies such as biased opinions, read the summary to view the author’s conclusion of the study. Research-based practices should be implemented in the guidelines of care, recommendations from high to moderate scientific outcomes that have the most benefit and do the least harm. Nurse Managers and Educators will analyze research constantly to review high to low research studies (Gandhi et al., 2018)

Thanks for the informative post.
One way to evaluate the credibility of sources is to examine these five attribute:; timeliness, authority, audience, relevance, and perspective. Timeliness this depends on the topic of the paper. In healthcare, we generally use 5 years as the cut off. However, if we were discussing a historical event, the timeliness of the material would be connected to that time. Authority involves not only the author but the journal and the peer-reviewed process. Audience, who are the readers and what is the publication’s purpose. As nurses, where are do you get your information for practice? Professional journals over the newspaper or magazines. Websites are a good source but should be evaluated by different standards than research studies or journal articles. Relevance: ask does this relate to the topic and how does it relate are important questions to ask. Perspective (some sources use bias/objectivity): Is the information presented without bias? Does the author try to persuade the reader or direct the interpretation of the facts?

The five attributes that are significant in evaluating the appropriateness of a source in clinical practice, including relevance, authority, date or timeliness, appearance, and reason for writing, can be analyzed using a critical appraisal tool, which aims to investigate the intricate and particular parts or aspects of the information systematically.
Critical appraisal involves the meticulous examination of information based on its trustworthiness and relevance to a specific topic or context (Lancaster University, 2022). It is usually used in journal articles, which are secondary and the preferred sources to be used in evidence-based practice, to incorporate the best available external evidence in the management of patients in the clinical setting. Particular tools can be used for this, such as the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) Tool (Critical Appraisal Skills Programme, 2018).
Some are specific to a particular study design, while the others are general. These include identifying the research question and study design, recognizing the issues in selecting the participants or the control and experimental groups, in case of randomized controlled trials evaluating the outcome factors, study factors, and the confounders, the use of appropriate outcome measures, and s...
