Appraisal of a Qualitative Study
To analyze the symptom experience of older adults with type 2 diabetes and diabetic-related distress, researchers used two non-probability methods of sampling, convenience sampling, and snowball to recruit the participants CITATION Her19 \l 1033 (Hernandez, et al., 2019). Convenience sampling is a method of sampling where the sample is taken from a population easy to contact or reach. On the other hand, Snowball is a sample method that focuses on rare traits to find. The research is based around interpretive phenomenology analysis, where the qualitative research will require added context and input to make sense of the phenomenon being discussed. As such, researchers rely on interviews to find out the daily experiences of older adults living with type 2 diabetes and come up with a cohesive analysis and conclusion.
Based on the sample methods, the conventional method of sampling is focused on targeting older adults with type two diabetes. This population is easy to reach because type 2 diabetes remains the overwhelmingly common type of diabetes in American adults, according to a study by the University of Iowa CITATION Iow18 \l 1033 (Iowa, 2018). Snowball’s method of sampling caters to finding participants with diabetes-related distress. This type of population will be rare as different diabetes patients will experience different levels of distress based on the type or severity of diabetes.
Data collection is done through interviewing the population to try and understand their daily experiences living with diabetes. This is the best approach as the interviewer will be able to engage with the patients on an individual level. This makes the interaction feel effortless, and the patient is more likely to share their experiences and struggles dealing with diabetes. The interview intends to find out what type and level of symptoms the patients experience, what medications and which don’t, importance of self-monitoring, exercise, and healthy eating.
The procedures of this research are all geared to try and investigate how diabetes-related distress might be uniquely experienced among older adults with type 2 diabetes. For starters, the sample selection limits the sample size to contain only older adults (≥65 years). The approach is accurate as more than 25% of the American population aged (≥65 years) has diabetes. It is more relevant as this population is the most affected by diabetes-related distress, such as the increased risk of institutionalization, reduced functional status, and higher mortality rate CITATION MSu12 \l 1033 (Kirkman, 2012).
