Trends in Communication Paper (final) (25 points)
Professional Situation: Communication practitioners are expected to keep up with current trends in the field and to know how these trends can be effectively implemented.
This paper will give other communication professionals an overview of what’s trending in the communication field. You will include recommendations that tell practitioners about how to use this trend in a specific communication situation.
What is a trend? A trend is an aspect of current practice that extends the core principles and strategies of our profession into a new communication channel or platform, new form of message, new visual format, new approach to crafting messages, etc. For example, a strategic communication plan is not a trend because it’s been part of our practice for a long time. Data visualization as part of a communication plan may be a new trend. Similarly, testing a communication campaign is not a trend, but using AI technology to do that testing is arguably a new trend.
You are encouraged to review the list of topics and the sample paper included in the online resources to generate your ideas. (See "Trends Paper Ideas" in the navigation bar under "Assignments" in BlackBoard to access the online resources).
Focus and Content of the Trend in Communication Paper
1. You will write a 4-6 page paper that explains to other communication practitioners why you believe the one trend you have selected is among important trends for one or more areas of communication practice.
*Include only ONE trend in the paper.
*State the purpose of the paper clearly in the introduction.
2. Specify the target readers of the Trend in Communication paper. What kind of readers will benefit most from reading your report? What type of communication field do they work in (e.g., health or political communication, public relations, corporate, activist, etc.)?
3. Describe and explain the communication trend clearly. Some readers may not know about the trend.
4. Briefly summarize relevant history for the trend – how did the trend emerge?
5. Case examples: offer specific, real-world examples of how the trend is happening and being implemented by people/organizations. Use these examples as evidence for your claims about the trend’s impact, scope, benefits, etc.
6. Explain the benefits and challenges of the trend in communication practice. These can include cost, effectiveness, engaging the target audience, etc.
7. Next, give several strategic recommendations about how practitioners can meet the challenges raised by this new trend to reach target audiences. Think about the first step that an organization might take to implement this trend. Consider what best practices the practitioners should apply when implementing this trend.
8. Research: Provide evidence from class readings and outside sources. Use a minimum of six sources. At least one of your sources should be a peer reviewed article from a communication/business journal. Because there is often a delay before peer reviewed articles are published, you may not find an article exactly on-point to your topic. In this case, you should find materials that relate to an aspect of your topic, such as audiences, technology, communication practice, etc.
9. Organization and Editing: Pay careful attention to organization, editing, and high-quality information.
10. The paper should be formatted following these guidelines: APA format: double-spaced, cover page, abstract, headers, page numbers, in-text citations, references page.

Deepfake technology is a new trend that started in 2017. Indeed, it involves using artificial intelligence (AI) to make and alter videos, audio, or images. In other words, deepfake technology can be used to audio, images, or videos digitally to spread information. Social media strategists or managers can benefit from this new trend by helping organizations and people to present themselves on social media appropriately. These communication practitioners analyze how individuals communicate on social networking platforms, and they advise them accordingly. However, they should understand how to overcome the challenges posed by deepfake technology. The paper focuses on deepfake technology and how social media strategists can use it to promote individual or organization brand name and reputation creation and maintenance.
The primary readers of this paper are social media strategists who want to understand how to use social media platforms, such as TikTok, to promote new product launches. These target audiences will benefit the most by knowing how they can use the deepfake technology. Social media strategies work in various communication fields, including political, public relations, corporate branding, activism, healthcare, education, transport, fashion, and personal branding. The use of deepfake video technology is rapidly increasing. For instance, there exists a face-swapping app known as Zao, which allows users to swap faces with celebrities to create a deepfake video within a few seconds (Rees, 2019). As such, the deep generative modeling enables users to generate duplicate actual faces to create impressively true-to-life images, audios, and videos.
Deepfakes emanate from using AI to merge, superimpose, combine, and replace videos and images to come up with fake videos that look authentic. A deepfake technology can be used to generate a political, humorous, or pornographic video of an individual saying something without the consent of the one whose voice and the image are involved (Westerlund, 2019). For instance, in a 2019 CNN Business article "When Seeing is no Longer Believing," there is a deepfake video of the former president of the United States of America (USA) saying that "We are entering an era which our enemies can make it look like anyone is saying anything at any point in time" (CNN Business, 2019). In other words, with deepfake technology, it is possible to take the face and voice of someone to create a fake video where the person seen talking was never involved.
As mentioned in the beginning, the first deepfake video was uploaded in 2017 by a Reddit user. The creator posted pornographic video clips that swapped the faces of different celebrities, including Scarlett Johansson, Gal Gadot, and Taylor Swift (Sample, 2020). In reality, it takes a few seconds to swap faces. Notably, a person runs thousands of faces of two individuals in an AI algorithm known as the encoder.
