Introduction
Supply chain success requires laid down strategies, execution plans, and solid leadership (Simchi-Levi, Simchi-Levi, &Kaminsky, 1999). An informal organization of supply chains, the absence of supply chain reviews, and lack of supply chain oversight are the critical issues dragging supply chain success. Some organizations have at least an established leadership, though they do not pay attention to the aspects of the supply chain but rather the costs incurred during their operations. The organization of the whole system is, however fundamental to these leaders.
Although most managers were willing to follow then Supply Chain Council Operations Reference framework, following the steps and outlines is not enough to prompt supply chain success. Its use should be accompanied by the implementation of an inclusive supply chain approach and a functional plan (Council, 2010). However, several firms reported an improvement in functionality after incorporating strategies and plans into their supply chain efforts.

Data from company leaders that had outlined the aims and approached stated that 22 out of 100 organizations had defined goals while 43 of the 100 had somewhat stated their objectives. Interviewing each of these leaders, however, gave different insights, including the fact that the output of the companies gave the impression of existing strategies and execution plans, though this was not the case (Bowersox, Closs, & Cooper, 2002). Even the sections in a business entity would not be able to outline its strategies thus impairing the execution. The incoherence between the entity’s goals and those of the supply chain section is a major drawback to supply chain success. A survey on the impact of supply chain strategies on the overall firm yielded less than half positive remarks from the interviewees. The firms whose strategies and supply chain initiatives were most aligned had the most successful leaders.
Most entities, however, have situations in which the strategies are either not properly implemented, or, the supply chain managers have no place in developing the business strategies. The supply chain strategies derived should conform to the overall business strategies to attain alignment, yet the supply chain managers have little influence over the business aims. The result is a failure of business plan to yield from supply chain aptitudes.
Communication is vital if an entity is to achieve specific goals (Mentzer et al. 2001). The ability of leadership to converse with the rest of the organization is critical in executing the strategies and plans it has laid down. 42 out of 100 companies agreed to have properly communicated their objectives to the members. This is so disheartening since goals are best achieved when people know the objectives and the outlined plans towards achieving these goals. Documentation of the results and direct access to them is also important as it shows the extent to which the organization has gone in an implementation of the laid down plans. The existent communication is however from the leaders to the corporates, and top-down in rare cases.
