Introduction
In the modern business world, businesses are reevaluating their supply and sourcing approaches, increasing suppliers, and restrategizing supply chains to reduce significant exposures to disruptions. Today, resilience goes beyond risk mitigation; it entails establishing a proactive, flexible, and adaptable ecosystem. This research paper evaluates the concept of resilience and the threats in the supply chain.
Defining Resilience in the Context of Supply Chains
In the supply chain context, resilience implies the capability to anticipate, make the necessary preparations, react, and bounce back from disruptions (Golgeci & Kuivalainen, 2020). Resilience is dynamic and changes in response to the situation or disruption. Natural calamities, economic fluctuations, political instabilities, and unexpected occurrences or changes in terms of supply and demand may cause such disruptions. Key factors that characterize resilience in the supply chain include identification of risks and evaluation, flexibility, redundancy, supplier diversifying, contingency planning, information sharing, and adaptive ability, among others.
Threats to the Supply Chain
The study of resilience goes hand in hand with evaluating threats in the supply chain; thus, this paper will examine such threats. Many threats that will significantly hinder the flow of goods and services may present significant threats to a supply chain. Natural phenomena such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and fires are hazardous to supply chains since they destroy the transport infrastructure. Global political events like trade wars, unstable government policies, or even sanctions affect the world supply chain through trade barriers, uncertainties, and possibly stoppages in the movement of goods and services (Katsaliaki et al., 2021). Other substantial risks to supply chains include artificial disasters, health pandemics, cyber security risks, disparities in demand and supply of goods and services, global warming, and financial crises.
