Challenges faced in airport operations. Research Paper

Research Paper Instructions:

Based on the assigned readings and our interactions throughout week 3 you should be able to converse clearly with the class about facts and opinions on key airport facilities required for enplanements and deplanements of passengers and bags, key modes of transportation that comprise an airports ground access system, and many of the designs of today's airport terminals.

Your assignment is to write a research paper regarding what many consider to be the number one challenge most airports face today; how to move large groups of passengers though airport terminals quickly and efficiently. We will get into more of this when we talk about capacity planning in week 6, but for now you should focus on what key facilities are required, and on the ground access system. Let's hear some great example as well as some failed concepts such as mobile lounges, and talk about why they are great or why the evolution of airport operations caused them to die.

Please ensure you venture beyond the textbook for this assignment. Based on material covered in the class, the student should identify the problem/situation, provide a resolution/approach, give a rationale to your approach and expected outcome/conclusion. This paper will be presented in APA format and the writing requirement described in the Policies section of this syllabus. The paper is graded on contents, grammar, and format. Minimum word should be 1000 words with a minimum of 3-5 outside references.

Air transport is one of the fastest growing modes of transport in the world today. It has gained a lot of popularity especially among the people of the higher class in the society. However, due to the fast growing rate of air travel, air transport has been faced with various challenges including security scares, strained budgets, congestion and delays among others. Notably, some of the challenges have existed for quite some time and solutions devised to address these issues do not seem to sustainably curb these challenges. Today, the number one challenge, which forms the larger part of discussion in this essay comprising its solutions include congestion and delays in most airports across the world.
Indeed, the number one challenge currently faced by most airports includes congestion and delays. With the growth of air travel over time, there is an increase of people using air travel hence causing congestion in airports (Barnhart, Belobaba & Odoni, 2003). The airport capacity can barely sustain the number of people in airports today and this has consequently contributed to the fear of insecurity. Delays are the most common complaints by passengers in most airports across the US today. Notably, these delays and congestion are brought about by unavoidable circumstances such adverse weather, aircraft mechanical technicalities, closed runways, and taxiways including instances when the flight volumes are high in the terminal area (Freestone, 2009). The unpredictable change in weather is claimed to be the highest cause of delays. Once there is a delay in a certain location, it affects the rest of the scheduled flights since the entire system is interconnected. During these delays, passengers tend to lose their luggage or find their luggage damaged. Even worse, the passengers do not receive compensation for their lost or damaged luggage.
In the United States of America, the increased demand for air travel contributed to the delays in airports. Whenever flights are delayed or cancelled, they have real life implications that interfere with the day to day activities of an individual. One might miss a business meeting, miss a trip or cut short of spending enough time with family and friends. The customers need to be aware of their rights so that the management can take it into their own hands to ensure that there are no delays or cancelled flights. A similar challenge was experienced before and having a Congestion Management Program (CMP) to deal with the congestion problem in airports was one of the solutions embraced in different main airports (Biggs & Mitroff, 2015). The management had to work out ways to handle and manage the capacity in airports hence reduce delays. Another solution was the improvement of airside infrastructure. However, these solutions did not work efficiently due to various reasons including poor management of the programs put in place to curb contestation and delays in airports. Additionally, the congestion management program put in place proved incompetent and therefore unreliable. Therefore, unable to come up with ways to handle this issue only rendered this approach an epic fail.
