The article Apple and Its Suppliers: Corporate Social Responsibility talks about the smartphone industry and Apple's position. Apple has continued to enjoy positive results financially. However, as history indicates, the company had some dark days and was almost shut down. However, the reinvention that started with Steve Jobs led the company to the top, and with its customer loyalty intact, Apple continues to make profits today.
However, Apple had a few issues that rubbed the media and other stakeholders the wrong way, even its success. Apple’s suppliers, Foxconn and Pegatron, happened to have violated labor standards. For Foxconn, the violations were so bad that an employee committed suicide, and 18 others attempted suicide. As per the article, Apple promised to make adjustments and ensure that its suppliers do not violate labor standards. However, so far, there has been little notable effort made. Also, the company has acted contrastingly with its promises. The article notes that when Foxconn made amends to its labor standards, Apple shifted business to Pegatron, which the BBC reported to condone working conditions worse than Foxconn’s.
Going forward, Apple is expected to keep outsourcing, as the article indicates. However, numerous questions arise as to whether Apple can continue working with its global suppliers as an outsider. Also, questions arise as to what Apple needs to do to ensure that its global suppliers subscribe to labor standards.
Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate social responsibility is a cog or a key component to the success of a company. Companies that invest heavily in CSR also happen to be among the most profitable. As the article indicates, in 2014, Apple was “ranked fifth on Forbes best reputations list.” So, CSR does not take away from a company’s profits.
However, CSR with a touch of employee treatment is crucial because of the human factor or angle involved. Therefore, people are emotional beings and will relate more with stories or incidences that invoke their sympathies. Almost every employee in the world who hears about the mistreatment of others will feel a connection, and companies can easily wreck their reputation by being involved with labor standards violations. Furthermore, employee performance will likely drop since employee engagement will be greatly impacted. Glavas (2016) notes that CSR that touches on enhancing working conditions will lead to greater employee engagement. Griek (2017) adds that there is also the likelihood that employees will identify with their company and commit to the company. Lastly, a company will protect its reputation better if it treats its employees well. As indicated earlier, customers will respond to stories of employee mistreatment harshly, which could lead to poor profitability.
