Biological Class of Molecules

Research Paper Instructions:

Name: Date:
Every year the human body has an awards gala for its biological molecules, cells, tissues and systems called the Vitruvian Awards. To be considered for the awards each class of biological molecule must hire a publicist to submit a portfolio to the
Vitruvian Awards Committee detailing their contributions to the human body. As a publicist, you have been hired by one of the classes of biological molecules to prepare a portfolio for the Best Supporting Cast Award. Are you up for the task?
You are a publicist who has been hired by a group of biological molecules to help them win the Best Supporting Cast Award for their work in the body. Do you know enough about biomolecules to help them win?

Instructions
o Work through the Unit 1 Lessons and videos.
o Choose one biological class of molecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins or nucleic acids) to prepare a portfolio that will be submitted to Vitruvian Awards Committeefor the Best Supporting Cast Award. Please ensure the portfolio includes the following information:
o brief biography of each cast member
if you choose carbohydrates your cast members must include monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides
if you chose lipids your cast members must include fats/oils, phospholipids, and steroids
if you chose proteins your cast members must include amino acids, and proteins
if you choose nucleic acids your cast members must include nucleotides, DNA, and RNA
o head shot of each cast member (picture/diagram of the molecule)
o brief description of where the cast members come from (How do they get into the body…via what types of foods?)
o brief description of the important roles of the cast members within the body
(What do they do?)
o brief description of how the body would be lost without the cast members (How does their absence affect the body?)
o final summary convincing the judges of why your clients (your chosen class of biological molecules) deserve to be recognized as the Best Supporting Cast over the three other classes of biological molecules.
This Project will be graded according to Marking Guide at the end of this document. Submit your portfolio using the Assignment Tool for Unit 1

Nucleic acids play a vital role in the continuity of life. In essence, they carry the instructions necessary for cell functioning and the blueprints of a cell. The major types of nucleic acids are ribonucleic acids (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA). RNA and DNA are made up of nucleotides. Nucleotides merge to form polynucleotides, RNA, or DNA. Individual nucleotides consist of a phosphate group, a nitrogenous base, and a pentose or five-carbon sugar. The nitrogenous bases are attached to sugar molecules, which are attached to phosphate groups. Nucleotides help in muscle growth, toxin neutralization, and cellular metabolism. RNA is used in protein synthesis. DNA is a genetic material and is found or located in the body of all living organisms
The Messenger RNA (mRNA) acts as the go-between for the entire cell and the nuclear DNA. The mRNA transcribes the DNA’s parts and sends readable messages to organelles instructing them to either assemble or divide. The messenger RNA is exported to the cytoplasm from the nucleus and has the information required for protein formation. Nucleic acids get into the body through different sources. Foods rich in nucleic acids are; vegetables, seafood, nuts, mushrooms, meat, and yeast. Seafood consists of sardines, fish, and chlorella plant-like algae. Nuts consist of high unsaturated fats and proteins that prevent heat-related illnesses. Vegetables are rich in nucleic acid, for example, Chine cabbages, broccoli, spinach, beans, and cauliflower. Other cultivated plants that show high nucleic acid levels are cereals and pulses (Minchin & Lodge, 2019). Oyster, flat, and whitecap mushrooms are rich in nucleic acids. Meat is naturally rich in nucleic acids, including beef, pork, and red meat.
Nucleic acids are essential in all biological processes that occur in the human body. The functions of nucleic acids are; helping with gut repair, encourage cell growth, boosting antioxidants, and strengthening the immune system. DNA is a double-helical structure with two strands running in opposite directions, contained in every cell, and encodes genetic information that cells use to make the functional and structural proteins. When new cells are produced, old cells duplicate their genetic data and form two similar DNA sets. RNA aids the cells in making proteins from DNA by transferring the genetic data from inside the nucleus to the exterior and reading the genetic data, and generating proteins from the same (Li et al., 2020). DNA is transcribed into mRNA and then translated into proteins allowing for the inheritan...
