Introduction
Genetic modification involves artificial modification and manipulation of organisms through genetic engineering to express new traits. Genetically modified organisms are engineered in the laboratory aiming at favoring desired physiological traits and production of desired biological products. The breeding of selected breeds of individual species in livestock production, crop farming, and pet breeding through genetic modification techniques have enabled the production of offspring with desirable traits. Different researches have been conducted to prove the credibility of genetic modification and its potential in enhancing productivity, especially in the agricultural field. This results with the rising ethical dilemma on the health issue concerning genetically modified produced agricultural good and the associated impacts on human health. The analysis of genetically modified organisms provides a clear outline of how the biological technology has influenced productivity in a different field with its credibility and how scientific research have been applied to solve existing ethical dilemmas as discussed herein.
The production of genetically modified organisms is basically through scientific methods which involve recombinant DNA technology and reproductive cloning (Fridovich-Keil & Diaz, 2018). Reproductive cloning involves the extraction of a nucleus from a cell of an individual organism and inserted to the enucleated cytoplasm of the host egg. The offspring produced from the nuclear infusion process is mainly genetically identical to the donor individual. In the modern world, genetic modification of organisms is used to enhance performance in agriculture and enable the production of valuable pharmaceutical products. The prominent organisms that have been subjected to genetic engineering include crop plants, farm animals, and soil bacteria.
Genetically modified organisms resulting from genetic engineering processes is currently part of everyday life with the major loopholes to the society being through the agricultural sector, medicine, research, and environmental management (Fridovich-Keil & Diaz, 2018) Despite the major benefits of GMOs in society, there are varieties of disadvantages associated with the adopted technology. The topic on healthy and ethical concerns of GMOs has remained controversial to many, with a group of researcher opposing the technology due to associated impacts. The adaptation of genetically engineered agriculture has been valued across the world as an advanced way of enhancing agricultural productivity and therefore relevant for solving food insecurity challenge especially in the developing world.
Consumers across the world have a limited level of knowledge concerning genetically modified food. The study on scientific facts basing on genetically modified food published in...
