Two weeks ago I got a rare opportunity to attend the Mathew Barney’s River of Fundament exhibition that is on view at MOCA through January 18, 2016. I am not a big fan of art exhibitions, but after attending Barney’s exhibition I thought, wow, this is a manifestation of a mature and confident artist. In the various works of art that were on display, Barney has explored mythologies, evolution of flesh and spirit, the drive for supremacy and transcendence, and issues of ancient past and the uncertain present. This exhibition changed my whole perception about artists and art in general.
One thing that I was amazed from the exhibition was Barney’s attention to detail. Before the exhibition, I had heard a lot about Mathew Barney and I was surprised at how he was able to weave the story of the 1967 Chrysler Crown Imperial’s demolition with the tale of the Egyptian god Isis, Osiris and the afterlife. This construction of unlikely coalitions presents Barney as a highly skilled artist. One thing that I noticed from the exhibition was that the most unlikely, gross or disgusting components of the film have been added details that transform them into glorious objects. I had watched the River of Fundament film before going to the exhibition and this gave me a full understanding of the entire exhibition. I actually think that anyone who goes to the exhibition without first watching the movie will have a hard time understanding the concept that Barney passes across in the exhibition.
