Reflection on Sexuality and Gender Readings
I have always been interested in understanding sexuality and gender issues affecting society. Some of the readings that I have gone through have played an important role in shaping my views about the topic. Sexuality and gender issues are still deeply rooted in our society and most of the people who are affected by these issues are unable to come out and speak due to the fear of victimization or stigmatization by society. Some of the readings were written sometimes back but the truth is that the issues mentioned in the readings are still prevalent in our societies.
One of the authors who cover this aspect is Carolyn Steedman in the book, The landscape for a good woman: A story of two lives. The author notes that women are still experiencing so many troubles in society and their dreams have not been realized. The best quote from the book that describes this is found in p. 22 of the book where she writes, “The faces of women on the ques are faces of unfulfilled desire” CITATION Ste87 \l 1033 (Steedman, 1987). This reading got me to reflect on the current situation in our society. There is still gender discrimination in different areas. Legislations are passed to protect women but these legislations are not adhered to. In some countries, women are still viewed to be of a lower class and not 'powerful' as men. This limits their expression and some of them end up suffering in silence.
