Indigenous People of the World
History is the backbone of our existence. It is the pillar stone upon which the present day has been fashioned. A rich piece of history is embedded in looking into the indigenous peoples of the world. Humanity is based on the existence of these indigenous people who are considered the cradle of mankind. Indigenous people are groups of people who are protected by national and international frontiers since they are a preservation of culture. Effects of westernization and globalization may have affected the ways of life of these indigenous people, but they have not changed or altered in any way the ways of life and the culture of this people.
The Philippines are a good example of indigenous people in the world today. They are organized in well-organized independent villages called bangarays and they are Self-dependent (Banner 87). Agricultural activities in this community are supervised by leaders who also control it. The leaders are also charged with the responsibility of being in charge of trade that is mostly on an internal platform.
The social life of the Philippines is similar to any other modern community. By the fact that, man is a social creature, the Philippines engage in advanced socialization. Their socialization is characterized by social class stratification. They have three classes of people who are the maharlika, Timawa, and the Alipin.The maharlika are known as the noblemen or the upper-class were a marital class of freemen. They were exempted from taxes and paying of tributes. The Timawa represented the middle-class society that was a class for commoners. Unlike the maharlika, they were not exempted from paying taxes and tribute. The Alipin were the lowest in the social class stratification of the Philippines and were slaves. They had obligations to their masters as well as dependence on their masters.
Gender roles were also set out and women were charged with the role of religion. They passed religious virtues to their offspring. Men progressed with roles of security and provision of food for their families. The male fraternity had the responsibility of leading the community through government (Lea 37). The Philippine indigenous community was self-sufficient and trade activities were overseen by the leaders and were on a substantial level. Trade was on simple hand-crafted artifacts like spears, knives, embroidery, and bowls.
