Reaction to Contemporary Journalism
The third REQUIRED paper will be worth a maximum of 8 points. This assignment involves two
steps: viewing three brief TV segments, and then writing a paper based on what you viewed. First, you will need to view two John Stewart appearances on CNN: his 2006 appearance on Crossfire, and his appearance on Larry King Live in 2010. As John Stewart strongly criticizes the CNN show Crossfire, you should also view an episode to get a feel for the program. After watching these clips, I want you to think about the concerns about television and the American political system voiced in Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death, and discuss how John Stewart’s criticisms of Crossfire, CNN, and broadcast journalism as a whole, resonates with Postman’s arguments. Think about your own concerns about television and its impact on the serious social debate. Then you are to write a 4-6 page (1500-2400 words) essay, discussing those concerns—you will be free to take any position on the matter which truly reflects your thoughts. Grading will be based upon the quality of the insights which you present in your paper, the logic and organization of your writing, and the support which you provide for your arguments.
