Scott Cameron Pelley’s Speech of Acceptance
The second REQUIRED paper will be worth a maximum of 8 points. First, you are to view Scott Pelley’s 2016 acceptance speech, when he was given the Annual Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism & Mass Communication.
During this speech, he discusses both the importance of journalism in the world today, as well as many of its challenges. In this paper, you are writing a 4-6 page (1500-2400 words) essay discussing the points which he raises in the speech, as well as your response to them. What do you and what do you not agree with him about, and why? Are the issues he raises as important as he makes them out to be? Why do you say this? Your grading on this paper will be based on the insights which you provide, the support you give to your arguments, and (to a lesser extent) the quality of your writing.
This paper must be turned in, in hard-copy format, no later than Wednesday, February 20th, although you may turn it in earlier if you wish. Hopefully, this exercise will make you think a bit more deeply about the importance of journalism and the dissemination of information.
