Ethical Consideration is a Significant Factor in Medical Research
The Tuskegee Syphilis study was a forty-year study that aimed to record the natural history of syphilis (Alsan & Wanamaker, 2018). This study raised criticism among various scholars, with some arguing that the researchers played a race card and others believing that the experiment reflected society’s historical disregard for black lives (Thomas & Quinn, 1991).
One lesson from the article is that ethical consideration is a significant factor in medical research. The reading revealed that researchers neither obtained informed consent from participants nor enlightened them that the survey needed to detect syphilis. Instead, they recruited the subjects with misleading promises of special free treatment (Heintzelman, 2003). The predominance of black people in the study and how the experiment was conducted have enabled me to back the claim that genocide is possible and that public health authorities are untrustworthy (Thomas & Quinn, 1991). Treatment was well-known and widely available. However, researchers did not give it to participants.
