“The Long Haul” by Jennifer Couzin-Frankel portrays that some COVID-19 survivors remain sick for a long time while others heal within a short period. In particular, the world has been fighting against coronavirus for over nine months. Millions of people have been infected, and some of them have succumbed to the disease. Some individuals get severe symptoms of coronavirus and end up in the intensive care unit (ICU), while others get mild signs and recover within a few weeks. Couzin-Frankel’s article discusses the symptoms of coronavirus, its long-term effects on survivors, and suggest further studies that would help people to avoid chronic health conditions caused by COVID-19.
For Athena Akrami, a 38-years-old neuroscientist at the University College London (UCL), COVID-19 has significantly affected her lifestyle. A person who used to exercise at the gym about three times a week can longer do it. Her physical activity now involves moving from the couch to the bed or kitchen. Akrami is a long-hauler of the coronavirus. Some of the common symptoms that Akrami experiences include muscle and joint pain, extreme fatigue, cough, fever, shortness of breath, and chest pain (Couzin-Frankel, 2020). Since March, when Akrami got infected with COVID-19, her symptoms never go away. As such, people need to know that there is a category of individuals who, when infected, remain with the signs for an extended period. COVID-19 causes various health issues to infected people, namely shortness of breath, fatigue, achy joints, loss of smell, a racing heartbeat, and damages the brain, kidneys, lungs, and the heart.
