Please consider the costs of addiction to society and what implications these costs should have on policy and laws. Please elaborate when answering the following questions: (1) Because substance abuse has such high costs to individuals, their families, and society, should there be more stringent laws concerning access to alcohol, or punishment for illegal possession? For example, alcohol has high consequences should we consider banning alcohol or making it illegal for all ages? (2) In the same lens as chemicals of abuse, because of certain types of food can become addictive, should these products contain warning labels similar to what is placed on cigarettes? (3) What are your thoughts on the responsibility of lawmakers to make decisions that could buffer the costs of addiction on society?

The rate of substance abuse from the age of twelve in America continues to be high. Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance, and people who use it may be classified as casual drinkers, binge drinkers, or heavy alcohol users. Substance abuse comes with economic consequences to individuals, families, and society, such as treatment costs to the individual and their family, loss of productivity, increase in crime and medical expenses to the community, and drug exposure to infants. Due to the high rates of alcohol abuse, the government should impose strict laws to govern its use.
