William Foote Whyte’s “Race Conflicts in the North End of Boston” reveals the immigration of different groups of people to the North End in the 1800s. In particular, by 1850, the majority of immigrants in this region were Irish inhabitants. However, after 1880, the Irish population in the North End decreased rapidly (Whyte, 1939). As the Irish population left the region, Italians and Jews settled in the North End in large numbers. For instance, in 1895, the census showed that 6800 Irish, 7700 Italians, and 6200 Jews were in the North End (Whyte, 1939). Throughout the 1900s, the Irish population migrated in large numbers and Italians settled in the region.
