Letter About Immigration Policy

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

B. Write a letter to someone who is important to you, such as a close friend or family member, about one of the issues we studied in our most recent modules: police reform, reproductive rights, or immigration policy and how those issues may impact their civil rights or civil liberties.
1) Explain in your letter what you've learned about these policies
2) Explain why the issues you've learned about are important for them to understand (how they may impact your life or theirs) and
3) Explain how you think these policies could be improved to protect or strengthen our rights.
Questions to consider when writing either letter:
Are law enforcement policies and practices such as stop and frisk or recent immigration policies/practices or recent policies about reproductive rights consistent with our Constitutional rights? Have the courts protected those rights? Explain why or why not. (Consider the 4th, 5th and 6th amendments, federal immigration laws such as asylum, DACA, and/or Supreme Court cases in your response).
What changes or improvements do you think are most important to advocate for and why?
How will these changes protect or strengthen our rights under the law?

Writing Reflection
Dear Hunter,
I hope you are well and happy to receive this letter. I am writing to you today because I have been doing a lot of research and reading into current immigration policies and practices and how they may be impacting civil rights and liberties. I desire to share with you what I have discovered and the critical questions that we should consider to better understand how these policies may impact our lives. First, I want to share with you some of the aspects I have learned about current immigration policies and practices. I have been researching how law enforcement policies, such as "stop and frisk" and recent immigration policies and procedures, may impact people's rights and liberties.
I have also looked into how courts have ruled on these issues and protected those rights. It is vital to understand that the Constitution's Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments are related to civil liberties and freedoms. For example, the Fourth Amendment defends individuals from unreasonable seizures and searches, while the Fifth Amendment shields the right to due process. On the other hand, the Sixth Amendment protects the right to a fair trial. There are also federal immigration laws, such as asylum and DACA, that provide protections for those seeking refuge in the U.S. Regarding the Supreme Court's ruling on these issues, I discovered that it has been defending civil rights and liberties. For example, in the Department of Homeland Security v. Regents of the University of California Case of 2...
