Even as Paul Laurence Dunbar highlights the case for racial pride there is a complicated association of the racial and class associations. The works of Paul Laurence Dunbar are versatile yet addressing themes that were in his surroundings. On one hand, there is a distinct Negro dialect in the poems A Negro Love Song, The Colored Soldiers, We Wear the Mask but the dialect is not always apparent in some poems. Paul also affirms his identity as an African American, but then also sees himself as an America man who is incidentary Black. Furthermore, Dunbars attempts to humanize the Negroes in the eyes of the majority White population also meant that he created rhyming poems that addressed racial pride in deferent ways. In the poem, Little Brown Baby he reflects the concern of a colored father worried about the future of his son Fu' to be cross, er once loses dat smile? (Stanza 2, line 4)
