Berlin’s definition of creole comes from the word crioulo, which is Portuguese and means an individual born in the New World, though of African descent. In some instances, creole means Africans who entered Europe or people with mixed national and racial origins across the colonies of Europe. It also includes people born in Louisiana.
It is believed that Atlantic creoles originated from the various parts of Africa, especially the West coast, after interactions with the Europeans, at the beginning of the 16th century. One notable characteristic is the fact that they spoke multiple European and African languages. This resulted in pidgin, which involves creating unique words by borrowing from other languages. Apart from their linguistic dexterity, social agility and cultural plasticity were also evident in the creole population.
