Ethnography has emerged as one of the important parts in artwork. Since historical times it has emerged that pictorial images are important tools in understanding human history and culture. Through advancements in technology, anthropology and pictorial images have found a new way through which culture and history can be expressed. Although visual culture had for a long period remained in the closet of museums, it has emerged that visual culture is an essential part in postmodern artwork. Therefore, many artists around the world have found interest in reading anthropology in order to understand the history and culture of many people around the world. Through the study of anthropology, artists are able to understand connection between knowledge and culture.
From Maya Deren film project it can be argued that ancient knowledge had a cultural background. However, sometimes other people argue that culture is influenced by knowledge, therefore, as human beings increase in knowledge their culture also changed.
