According to the surrealists, the power of imagination can be unlocked by the unconscious, and that a rational mind diminishes the power of imagination, bringing it down with taboos. Again, surrealists believe that revelations can be found on the street and in everyday life. Notable names, including Andre Breton, have contributed to this school of thought. According to Andre, surrealism is a psychic automatism in its pure state. A person proposes to express either verbally or through the written word or by any other means that will show an exact thought process. One of Andre Breton's pieces on surrealism is the First Manifesto of Surrealism (1924). In these texts, Andre provides a vivid description of surrealism. The subsequent paragraphs will provide a textual analysis of the essay.
The Manifesto is a giant text. However, it can be distilled into a few important points. The first important point is that rationality is unpleasant. In the first part of Manifesto, Andre clarifies that he is dissatisfied with the over-rationalized trend of the modern society that was immediately after World War I (Breton 2). Before the war, society was flooded with idealist thoughts about science's power, and part of the blame was heaped on the idealist thoughts. According to Andre, obsession with rationalism resulted in boredom, with little or no room for imagination, fancy, and superstition.
