I agree with Brian that termination of Afghanistan was unsuccessful. This is because the war did not conclude in the terms America wanted. Brian indicates that the absence of a coherent strategy and a robust interpretation of Afghan's environment led to poor execution of the mission. I concur with Brian that America had to shift its strategy severally because the reconstruction strategy did not align with the timelines the U.S Department of Defense (DOD) had indicated. Afghan war termination was on a successful path. However, the implementation of termination strategies did not align with DOD's blueprint. The DOD had the required resources and competencies in handling techniques but not for enormous-scale reconstruction missions with massive economic and governmental aspects. This implies that no agency had the critical mindset, proficiency, and resources to create and handle the approach of rebuilding Afghanistan (Bamberger, 2022, 2). Whereas America had an initial strategy of destroying Al-Qaeda, the approach was scaled up to include efforts to defeat the Taliban. It also targeted Afghan officials who undermined American strategic goals in the Middle East.
Since 2001 America's primary goal in Afghanistan has been to degrade the terrorism threat against America and its allies. This primary aim was attained a decade ago as Al-Qaida's competencies are a fraction of what they were before. Regrettably, the Taliban reconquest of Kabul has made securing America's security interest in Afghan more challenging. America is now grappling with the Taliban whether the terrorists will succeed in attaining a secure haven and then create their external attack capacities or whether America is building a consistently efficient counterterrorism program.
Additionally, the worsening security forced the mission to enlarge in scope by American officials funding Afghan institutions. However, the lack of improvement after the civilian and military aid surge made it apparent that the main challenges were unlikely to be tackled by altering the resource levels (Bamberger, 2022, 2). The American government was not equipped to handle such an ambitious mission in an uncompromising atmosphere, irrespective of the budget.
