Upon reading the report written by Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, the American withdrawal from Afghanistan was largely unsuccessful in achieving its stated goals of stabilizing the country and establishing a functioning democratic government. The war in Afghanistan began in 2001 and has been one of the longest-running military conflicts in American history. Despite significant investment in military and reconstruction efforts, the security situation in the country remains fragile, and the government is still facing numerous challenges.
In his report, Sopko (2021, xiii) highlights several structural issues in the defense and interagency establishment that contributed to the outcome in Afghanistan.
