The informal economy encompasses income-generating economic activities, jobs, workers, and enterprises that do not fall under the state's protection and regulatory framework. It is a type of economy that complements a formal economy (a state-regulated economy). Immigration is one factor contributing to the spread of the informal economy in the cities. However, it is far from being the primary cause. Most often, immigrants are low-income earners. They can conveniently take up jobs in the informal economy sector since most times, the informal economy operates within low-income areas.
