Dignity in social care is simply the provision of care to support and promote an individual's self-respect by acknowledging their care capacity and life goals without undermining them in any way. Seven principles guard the dignity of care, beginning with promoting good relationships and effective communication, advocating for anti-discriminatory practices by developing suitable policies, ensuring confidentiality about the personal information and status. Other additional principles include recognizing an individual's beliefs, diversity, keeping individuals off abuses, and encouraging dignity, empowerment, safety, and independence. In short, it is good to treat people the way one would wish to be treated too. Dignity in social care among the elderly is determined by the eight dignity factors and their relationship with the different diversity of the elderly groups.
With communication as the first factor, the patients have to be involved in the decision made about their care. Putting them part of the treatment could make them feel that they have control over their health. Moreover, there could be a change in the medication and restriction on some foods by the doctor (Fočić, 2017). The elderly should also be addressed with a lot of care and respect. Not everybody entertains being talked to childishly and limiting some sweet words when they irritate the patient. However, if the elderly patient enjoys being referred to in a particular manner, the caregiver should master the name and always remember to address them properly. Alternatively, if the resident is a retired professional and prefers being referred by their titles, referring to them would acknowledge their dignity.
Secondly, food type and nutrition are essential factors to consider in an elder care home. Due to the age factor, elders may be limited to particular types of food, and it is right to allow them to choose what they would wish to eat. Most importantly, the elderly may eat slowly and should be given enough time for having their meal peacefully without rushing. For instance, serving residents pizza on something like a plastic plate shows a lack of dignity and could disgust them to the extent that they fail to finish the dish. Choice and individual control over whatever they like and how they want it is a vital factor. People like elderly ladies like it when consulted about what they wish to wear and choose their favorite clothes. The caregiver may lay down the clothes and discuss what they want for the day (Fočić, 2017). Generally, they should have the freedom to make their own decisions.
 Fourthly, social inclusion is essential for making the care enjoyable. Mealtimes are the best moments when residents can share and laugh as they enjoy the meal. Therefore, everyone must be allocated a table to feel free to interact and eat at their own pace. Additionally, creating a moment of showcasing crafting skills and arranging special occasions promotes the feeling of inclusivity among them elderly residents. Fifth is individual privacy.
