Lesson Plan: Histograms and Bar Graphs

It will include one activity and four discussions with extra exercises to help students present data graphically. Students will also learn how to differentiate bar graphs from the histogram and know how to use each appropriately in different situations.
Objectives
On completion of the lesson, students will be able to:
* Provide examples of how information or data can be variously presented in different graphical forms.
* Describe the differences between histograms and bar graphs.
* Illustrate how the vertical axis (y-axis) affects the display or representation of data in histograms and bar graphs.
* Describe also how class intervals affect the representation of statistics in histograms.
* Outline the features and the advantages of bar graphs.
* Identify and explain types of bar graphs.
Duration of the lesson
Four class periods of 40 minutes each.
Materials
* Sample data for bar graph scales that contain various kinds of data to be used, for example, data on win versus losses of top two football teams, data on weather comparison, statistics of monthly reports of crime rate in the town, sales report of the fast-growing company are commonly used sample data.
* Access to an internet browser
* Pencil and paper
* Metric ruler
