Wastewater Treatment and Its Importance
Wastewater treatment entails the process of removing contaminants from sewage or wastewater before water can be released into the water cycle for reuse. Treated wastewater has no adverse effects on the environment. Indeed, it can be released to lakes, oceans, estuaries, seas, and rivers. In particular, water becomes polluted if it contains impurities that make it not fit for drinking, fishing, or swimming. In most cases, human activities are the source of water pollution. For example, numerous manufacturers use water during their production process or to clean their machinery. Due to the high contamination level, such water cannot be used immediately and must be treated to reduce contaminants before it is released to water bodies. If not treated, wastewater poses a danger to animals and plants. For example, if polluted water is released into lakes, it can cause the deaths of creatures living in the water.
Wastewater treatment is one of the primary ways of reducing water pollution. Notably, water is an essential resource that animals and plants cannot live without. In that case, if a large amount of it becomes polluted, it means that living organisms might suffer from the inadequacy of this critical resource. As such, wastewater treatment involves reducing contaminants in sewage such that the water can be returned to the water cycle. On that note, treatment might be physical, sludge, chemical, and biological. For example, physical wastewater treatment involves sedimentation, skimming, and screening to remove solid substances that are available in the sewage. Djamel Ghernaout and Noureddine Elboughdiri clarify that wastewater treatment is crucial since it ensures that animals and plants have enough water. For instance, with the growing population of humans globally, the primary way to enhance water reliability and sustainability is by treating wastewater (Ghernaout & Elboughdiri, 2019). Some of the methods used to treat wastewater include slow sand filters, activated sludge, and aerated lagoons. Consequently, wastewater treatment ensures there is clean and safe water for drinking and watering plants. 
How Wastewater Treatment Affects Living Things and the Physical World
Living things need clean and safe water for their survival. For example, humans, elephants, lions, kangaroos, dogs, and other animals need safe drinking water. When it comes to plants, they also require water to germinate, grow, and photosynthesize. Besides, wastewater is not appropriate for usage by living organisms. That is why wastewater treatment is crucial since it converts sewage into safe water that can be used in watering plants and for drinking by animals. Wastewater treatment ensures that water is not limited since the polluted water can be reused after treatment.
