Sweden's Criminal Justice System
Country Analysis
Sweden is a country that continues to amaze the world with how it maintains its neutrality yet is known to take a firm stand on several issues, including sustainability. First, Sweden is a monarchy, and like Britain, it is made up of a hereditary monarchy and a parliamentary system that is elected into office by the people. The country's population stood at 9.5 million as of 2021, with the major language and religion being Swedish and Christianity, respectively (BBC, 2021). The Swedish people are known to be friendly and among the heaviest coffee drinkers in the world (Sweden.se, 2022). Further, Swedish people love outdoor activities, are strict with time, and their society maintains a culture of egalitarianism. Swedish society is highly committed to the principle of equal rights for everyone. An example of this being showcased publicly is the country's otherworldly tolerance for refugees. Tomson (2020) affirms the statement above, indicating that compared to other countries in the world, Sweden "has taken in the most refugees per capita" despite its small size. Today, Sweden boasts of being one of the most secular societies in the world, with an increase in Muslims greatly transforming the country's politics and society at large.
Economy
According to the Heritage Foundation, the Swedish economy is among the strongest economies in the world. Currently, the country's GDP stands at $562 billion, with income per capita at $54,146 (Heritage Foundation, 2022). Other aspects that showcase the country's strong economic position entail unemployment which stands at 8.5%, and inflation which is currently at 0.7%. Further, compared to other major economies in the world, Sweden also boasts of being a much freer economy. In the 2022 economic freedom score, Sweden ranked 11th in the world and 8th in Europe, and these help to showcase its growth trajectory thus far.
Transnational Issues (If Applicable) that may Impact Law Enforcement
Sweden has long been known to hold a neutral position in different matters. However, it is crucial to note that the country is on a list of a few countries that recognize and lawfully seek to fight transnational threats (Freedomhouse.org, 2022). Sweden's government is at the forefront when it comes to repressing transnational hostilities. The recognition of threats by governments to individuals in Sweden through the national security framework showcases a commitment by the Swedish government in its fight to ensure the protection of all people's rights.
Relations with the U.S.
Sweden shares a strong bilateral relationship with the U.S., which is based on shared values and interests. On the international stage, Sweden and the U.S. have shown a commitment to human rights, global democracy, sustainability, and gender equality, which has helped maintain their strong relationship.
Basic Government Structure and its Relationship to the Criminal Justice System
As already indicated, Sweden is a monarchy. However, the country's parliamentary system maintains leadership of the government. An article by the Swedish Institute indicates that in Sweden, the people are the most powerful be...
