Introduction
Nurses play an essential role in designing and implementing technological medical solutions to enhance healthcare organizations’ leadership and care delivery processes. Accordingly, nursing professionals spend a significant share of their time at the workplace interacting with patients at distinct phases of their care management. In this context, integrating information technology into the healthcare system redefined a graduate nurse’s role, especially when delivering care. The systems development life cycle (SDLC) offers the guidelines for managing and improving the health information systems’ quality and operations. This report discusses the role of the graduate nurse at each phase of the SDLC framework in the implementation of the new nursing documentation system.
Planning and Requirements Definition
In the planning and requirement description phase, the graduate nurse would define the issue and its scope, investigate the potentially feasible alternatives, decide on the most feasible choice, design the nursing documentation project schedule, integrate all the necessary resources, and launch the system (Rehani, n.d.). In this capacity, the nurse would play different roles, including collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to design the project deliverables, establish the medical and technical requirements of the system, as well as establish the project feasibility (Strudwick et al., 2017). The primary purpose of this phase is to establish the problem scope and its feasible solutions. Resources, time, benefits, costs, and other deliverables are considered at this phase (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021).
Analysis
At this phase, the nurse participation would entail critically evaluating the new nursing documentation system, especially concerning its quality and functionality aspects. The nurse conducts system analysis to analyze the end users’ needs and expectations to ensure the newly implemented system meets such anticipations (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021). According to Erickson et al. (2020), restructuring delivery and payment systems is necessary to enhance the health care system’s capacity to put the clients’ interests first and support nurses and their interprofessional teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centered services. In this context, nurses develop user interfaces to match patients’ and interprofessional teams’ cognitive capabilities. In addition, nurses play a central role in appraising care quality, patient safety thresholds, and the possible issues related to effective coordination of care (Dudding et al., 2018). Nurses also collaborate with interprofessional teams to identify areas of improvement and make recommendations regarding how to proceed.
