Patient-centered care (PCC) ensures that individuals needing healthcare services are placed at the forefront of every clinical activity by working closely with them. During a clinical practicum, I had an opportunity to explore aspects of PCC when engaged in supervisory practices and applying learning in real situations. The relevance of the exercise was to enable knowledge integration, further psychomotor skills, and cultivate reasoning, leadership, communication, and problem-solving.
Objective: - To improve PCC competence with practical experience and knowledge of the concept’s vital elements by the end of the clinical practicum.
Experience in the Clinical Practicum
My practicum was at an acute medical care unit, where I witnessed numerous health conditions. Studying in a classroom environment is different, but applying skills honed in actual life events was the best feeling for a future medical professional. I was tasked with various duties within the clinical setting, including assessing patients, examining wounds, testing vital signs, and taking records. I had embarked on the practical experience feeling nervous, less confident, and uncertain of what to encounter. The first few days at the clinic entailed adjusting to chaotic, ongoing crises and busy routines typical in care facilities. Responding or reacting to such circumstances requires being empathetic, calm, skillful, professional, confident, compassionate, and patient, all of which I was to acquire. By the end of the experience, I felt much more ready and drawn into the role of a nurse.
Evaluation of Success
