Teaching Experience Reflection
Engaging the newly and young employed nurses at Austin State Hospital during the chemical exposure risk presentation was a thrilling and stimulating learning experience. The presentation captured the audience’s attention by stating the adverse impacts of extended exposure to chemical hazards (death and injuries) from a real-life experience in the hospital and highlighting the need for young and newly employed nurses to train in proper response and preparedness against chemicals risks. It aimed to enlighten the newly and young nurses regarding chemical exposure risk and its sources, health impacts, and potential mitigating factors. This paper reflects on the community teaching experience about the chemical exposure risk with the newly and young employed nurses at Austin State Hospital.
The presentation took one hour with the young and newly employed nurses at Austin State Hospital's hall. The teaching plan introduced the facility’s environment and discussed chemical exposure risk and related concepts. It highlighted that chemical risks originate from multiple sources, such as drugs, detergents, and sterilizing agents, and cause adverse health impacts like nervous damage, injuries, and premature deaths (Charlier et al., 2021). Moreover, the teaching outlined several mitigating factors, including personal protective equipment and adhering to procedures for handling and disposing of chemical waste. As per the community teaching plan, the presentation incorporated an experiential learning theory, where the participants reflected on chemical exposure risk in their working environment. Additionally, the nurses practiced various preventive measures against chemical risks by ensuring proper ventilation in the hall, wearing personal protective equipment like gloves and masks properly, labeling and storing different chemicals, and acting on how they would handle and dispose of different chemical wastes (liquid, solid, and gases) in their working environments.
Furthermore, the presentation outlined the epidemiological rationales for enlightening young professionals about chemical exposure risks, such as premature deaths, allergic reactions, congenital disabilities, lethargy, disease outbreaks, injuries, cancer, miscarriages, toxicity, dermatitis, and mild symptoms like fatigue, headache, and dizziness among the exposed individuals (Che Huei et al., 2020). Charlier et al. (2021) also highlighted the health-related impacts of chemical hazards, such as nervous damage, disabilities, illnesses, and injuries. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously equip and improve nurses’ knowledge and skills in managing and preventing chemical exposure risks to avoid the associated adverse health effects.
The teaching experience evaluation reflected that the newly and young employed nurses at Austin State Hospital achieved the anticipated learning goals. Based on direct observations during the teaching experience, the participants correctly wore prote...
