Overview
Effective communication is crucial in any organization but more so in healthcare institutions. The impact of ineffective communication in healthcare facilities can impact patients and the institution itself. As with other firms, poor communication results in decreased profits, but communication failures can adversely affect patient outcomes in healthcare. For instance, it can lead to misdiagnosis and various other medical errors that easily result in avoidable healthcare complications and, in some instances, death. I am writing this email to highlight some communication problems experienced in our workplace and recommend better ways to communicate in our organization.
Delayed Physician/Nurse Communication
In our hospital, pagers are still widely used for clinical communications, which could be more effective in making it difficult for healthcare professionals to get their jobs done because of delays in responses. Wastage of time that results from the use of pagers reduces clinicians’ productivity in addition to delaying patient care, which can have serious consequences to both the hospital and patients, such as reduced profits and poor service delivery. To solve this problem, I recommend using smartphones among physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Unlike pagers, Nguyen et al. (2015) suggest that it is possible, for example, for a nurse to directly call or text a physician through a mobile phone and inform them about a potentially life-threatening situation in the hospital ward. Doing this will save time and potentially lives. Mobile phones also improve customer satisfaction because, unlike pagers, where a nurse can take 30 minutes to get a response, they can only take a maximum of five minutes. Patient satisfaction scores direct affect reimbursement through HCAHPS scores.
