1 Remodeling and Repair
McCance and Sue (2013) define remodeling as a three-phase process where the existing bone undergoes resorption before a new bone is added as a replacement. Precursor cells in bone formation usually comprise of remodeling units that differentiate into osteoblasts and osteoclasts. These cells are found along the vascular channels, particularly the marrow cavities and on the free bone surfaces. Remodeling phases include activation, resorption, and formation. The process is initiated by activators such as physical stressors, drugs, hormones, or vitamin to induce apoptosis of osteocytes. A “cutting cone” that slowly absorbs the bone to leave behind an elongated resorption cavity is formed during resorption (McCance & Sue, 2013). A secondary/new bone is then formed by osteoblasts as the last phase.
