Granted, the world has more than enough resources to satisfy the needs of every being living in it. Nevertheless, availability is often a great issue. While a resource may be in plentiful in a certain location and time, there is always a chance that its scarcity in many other areas is lamentable. So many times, the person who has more physical, intellectual or emotional strength gets the power to dictate use and distribution of resources available at a particular time and place. Further, the scarcity of a resource has tremendous effect on socialization. With this in consideration, this study set out to bring out the type of competition that is likely to emerge when food, as an important resource, is in scarcity.

The study was carried out in the evening. This was the most appropriate time to get the subjects together for no other reason but to get their meals. In addition, it is the best time to ensure that immediate results were obtained.

The subjects of the study are three family cats. Ralph is cheerful, gentle and willing to do everything he can to appease others. Coy is playful, demanding and the biggest as well as the oldest of the cats. May, a few months in the world, is the youngest of the three.

The three cats live with the same family and share equal levels of love and care. Ralph and Coy have been playing and eating together since they came together. Marie naturally had to join them in their games after she knew her way about. She’s a lovely kitten, adored and treasured by her playmates. The trio was particularly picked for this study due to their harmonious and seemingly unselfish way of existence. They all have been used to getting their fair share of milk in separate containers every evening. For the purpose of this study, only milk enough for one cat was provided during this particular meal time. The milk was provided in a single container – unfamiliar to anyone of them in order to eliminate the chance of a claim to ownership.

There was a moment of slight hesitance after presentation of the container. When, however, the cats realized that no other was coming, they inquisitively approached it.
