A Watching Review of the Choreography of the Broadway Show, ‘Chicago'.
The American society of the mid-1970s experienced various challenges emanating from gang-related violence, excessive abuse of alcohol and drugs, as well as a religious following of celebrities. Celebrities on the other hand, drunk with the admiration and the undivided attention from fans and the public alike did everything in their power to always remain in the mainstream media. The publicity given by the media on matters relating to celebrities invited other professions into affiliating with the world of celebrities to share in the limelight. Government institutions were not left out in the exciting and somewhat controversial lifestyles of these individuals, and the whole system became infected corruption, greed, exploitation, and betrayal. Chicago was adversely affected by the disease and the media played a significant role in making celebrities out of criminals by giving suspects of heinous crimes, constant airplay and hence creating a following for them from a public hungry for such stories (Kissel, 2015). Theatres, on the other hand, took the opportunity of such incidences and stories to create plays and films based on them to either highlight the vices of the society or entertain their share of the audience. The Broadway show, ‘CHICAGO,' by Maurine Dallas Watkins relives the life of criminals turned celebrities through broken systems of justice and the society's moral decay. The play or rather the musical show is initially directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse.
